This photo was taken of Kukuihoolua Island during the big wave season in the winter months on the island of Oahu where a few locals come to fish from time to time. The strip of land is where many tour buses arrive every day on the north eastern side of Oahu called Laie Point.

The large rock just to the north of Laie Point is Kukuihoolua Island. For centuries this was one solid rock until a tsunami slammed into it in 1946. Since then, there has been a hole in the center where waves continually crash through it. It is amazing that after 60 years of continual waves crashing into it, the top has not caved in.

If you look closely, you can see where someone made it out to this rock and built a rock statue or Cairn, which still stands today even with huge waves crashing into the face of this rock for hours on end.

As per the Hawaiian legend of how these rocks were formed:
"La'ie Point, or Laniloa, is made up of sandstone with several small islands offshore. According to legend, the peninsula was once a "Mo'o" or giant lizard. After the legendary warrior Kana rescued his mother from Moloka'i, he set out on a journey to kill all the Mo'o in the islands. When he arrived at La'ie, he defeated the Mo'o and chopped its head into five pieces which he flung into the ocean. Each piece of the lizard's head can today be seen as one of the small offshore islands. Their original names were Kihewamoku, Moluaaniwa, Pulemoku, Malualai, and Keauakaluapaa. The names of the islands have changed over time. Today they are known as Mokualai, Kukuihoolua, Pulemoku, Mokuauia, and Kihewamoku.

Kukuihoolua Island, the closest of the five, is 423-feet offshore. This 1.3 acre islet has an elevation of 20 feet."
